Teriyaki eel can be eaten directly, and is usually placed directly on top of rice to become eel rice. Eel rice is divided into eel rice bowl (eel bowl, うなどん) and eel box lunch (eel heavy, うなじゅう). No matter which way you eat it, it is generally customary to sprinkle it with pepper powder containing Chinese medicinal ingredients, which is considered to be a seasoning that can increase the taste and help digestion (this is a way of eating that started in Kanto, Japan).
